Ecranizarea are la baza romanul autobiografic a Dianei Fossey.
Dian Fossey inspirata de Louis Leakey (Iain Cuthbertson) devine un antropolog a carei viata si-o dedica studierii primatelor antropoide si in special gorilelor . In Africa ea devine protectorul gorilelor vanate de localnici pentru carne si pentru a le vinde puii dar din aceasta cauza isi risca viata ea insasi.

De alfel inainte de ecranizarea romanului sau in 1985 Dian Fossey este asasinata undeva in Rwanda.
